Discrimination
What you need to know

Discrimination is the unfair treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of disability, religion, race, age, gender or sexual orientation. It is wrong.

As well as there being different grounds for discrimination, there are also different types of discrimination.

Direct discrimination

This is discrimination because of who you are.

In the 1960's in the U. S. A. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white woman to challenge the discrimination of the time. She was challenging direct discrimination on grounds of race.

Is Britain racist?

Roberta Gibb was the first woman to enter the Boston Marathon in 1966. At the time women were not allowed to enter and several men tried to wrestle her off the course. This was discrimination by gender.

Indirect discrimination

This is when you are treated 'equally' but that there is something that means you are at a disadvantage.

If a person is in a wheel chair and there is no ramp, then they have been denied access on the basis of their disability.

If an employer says that only people over 6 feet can apply, they are discriminating against groups of people who may be, on average, smaller. Women for example

What the law says

In the UK it is illegal to discriminate against people on the grounds of age, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, race, disability or religous belief.

There are a few exemptions to this, but generally, if you are discriminated against you are protected.
