Make Your Own Christmas Decorations
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a load of over the top decorations littering the place and making it look a lot like ... well ... a lot like Christmas.
Only you can say whether that would be a good thing or a bad thing ... Bah! Humbug!
Of course, everybody’s idea of what Christmas decorations should look like is different. Some like sober colour schemes that bring a bit of class to the proceedings.
Others just go over the top, mixing colour up, lots of flashing light, tinsel everywhere and even, heavens preserve us, lametta (those cheap looking strings of tinsel that get thrown on the Christmas Tree as a last touch that just makes it all look sort of American). Not that I am trying to say there is a right or wrong way to do things.
If you want to over egg the Christmas Decoration pudding, who am I to stand in your way.
Did I mention humbugs?
A Potted History of Christmas Decorations
Like Christmas itself, Christmas decorations predate the Christian era. When people were all pagans and proud of it, they decorated their homes for a winter festival of some kind. Whether Viking, Saxon, Roman or Celt, they would go a little mad at this time of the year, putting down their war axes and swords, loom weights and carding paddles, then wracking their brains for new and innovative ways to make the home look seasonal.
Back in the day, it was probably just a matter of bringing in as much evergreen plant material as possible and sticking it over the doors, presumably because it still contained the ‘life force’ when everything else had sort of died off.
These days, thanks to modern technology and a crazy consumer economy that will give us whatever we want, whenever we want it at the click of a PAYNOW button on a website, we can really go over the top ... and that is exactly what most people seem to do.
A Brief History Of The Christmas Ornament
Make Your Own Decorations
Of course, it is in the nature of things that although you might derive some pleasure from clicking on a website, waiting a bit and then getting a really nice-looking bauble, or a wreath or a string of tinsel, it is nothing compared will the sense of achievement you will get from making your own.
